Disney and Pixar’s next film, Luca, promises a sun-kissed Italian summer for a couple of totally ordinary-looking kids… who aren’t ordinary at all.
It’s very nice of Disney to give us this trailer in dreary February; all that gorgeous warm light is exactly what those of us in the northern hemisphere need right now. And the movie—directed by La Luna creator Enrico Casarosa—looks as charming as you’d expect from Pixar.

Here’s the synopsis:
Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Disney and Pixar’s original feature film Luca is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface.
The voice cast includes Jacob Tremblay as 13-year-old sea monster Luca; Jack Dylan Grazer as his sea-monster friend Alberto; Emma Berman as Giulia, the third member of their team of underdogs; Maya Rudolph as Luca’s mother, Daniela; Marco Barricelli as Giulia’s father, Massimo; and Jim Gaffigan as Luca’s father, Lorenzo. Presumably Daniela and Lorenzo are also sea monsters, unless one becomes a sea monster in some atypical fashion.
The film arrives in June, though it’s not yet clear exactly how—if it will be a simultaneous theater/Disney+ release or not.
